There are several societies that can evaluate the quality of the diamond you are
purchasing. The most widely utilized and respected is the Gemological Institute of
America (GIA). Other respectable societies include: Gem Certification and Appraisal
Lab (GCAL), American Gem Society laboratories (AGS), Northwest Gemological
Laboratory (NGL), and the International Gemological Institute (IGI).

Appraisal Reports
This report states the approximate retail replacement value of a diamond. The value is
calculated using current market data which typically reflects retail prices. All of the
characteristics that go into determining a diamond's quality are assessed when
making an appraisal.
The reports are needed in cases of loss, theft, or damage. If you have insured your
diamond (see care), your insurance company should provide an equal replacement of
your item. Many insurance companies will ask for an appraisal prior to insuring your
diamonds. You should store your appraisal report away from your diamonds and in a
safe location so that it can be referenced in cases of loss or theft.
